The eagle owl
The eagle owl, the provincial animal of Dalarna, used to be a common bird, but it was recently close to extinction. Birds have now been reared and released, so that the species is becoming stronger.
The once shy bird can be seen here in the Falun Mine. The eagle owl is often seen in the Great Pit looking for rabbits and crows and on the rubbish dump in search for rats and gulls. The eagle owl, which is the biggest owl in the world, often sits resting during the daytime in a crevice in the rock, and on early spring nights you can hear it calling out its scientific name: “Bubo bubo”.
